Story Time
We came to know about hummus quite late in our life. We had it for the first time when we both got married and moved to Pune. One day, we wanted to try a biryani place closer to our home. We checked the menu and started with a falafel wrap. And there! We had our love at first bite. That falafel wrap had some sauce inside which was not familiar and tasted extremely good. We couldn’t guess that it was hummus. In fact, we had no idea about such a thing.
We went there again and ordered the same falafel wrap. But that day we even ordered pita bread with hummus. When our order arrived, we were amazed by the creamy and luxurious dip that came along with some simple pita bread slices. We licked the bowl of hummus. And then we realized it is the same thing that is there in the falafel wrap too. That moment felt like we cracked some code to the treasury. Since then whenever we went to that place, we always ordered biryani with hummus. This combination actually tastes amazing. You must try that.
After a while, I checked the recipe for hummus online and decided to make it at home. It took me a while to get a similar taste but now I don’t prefer to buy hummus at all. I always make it at home. It is quick, easy, simple, and takes about 5 minutes to prepare. And like I always say, homemade is the best.
What is Hummus?
Hummus is a Middle Eastern dip or a spread that is made with boiled and softened chickpeas. It is a very simple recipe and yet it tastes creamy and delectable. It is made with simple ingredients like boiled (or canned) chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. Yes! That is it.
You can obviously customize the recipe as per your needs like you can use white beans instead of chickpeas. You can add other flavors like paprika, parsley, beetroot, spinach, etc.
Is Hummus healthy?
The main ingredient to make hummus is chickpeas. Chickpeas are a rich source of proteins which is quite healthy for the body. It also contains tahini which is made of sesame seeds that contain healthy fats, proteins, vitamins, antioxidants, etc. Both ingredients are good for the body.
If you are looking for a protein-rich recipe, you must make this. It does not just taste amazing but it is nutritious also for your body.
What is the best way to make Hummus?
To make hummus, you either need a blender or a food processor. I tried both. And honestly, the one made in the food processor tastes better. The only reason is the addition of liquid while making it in a blender (or mixer-grinder). Mixer grinders are not that powerful and to blend everything well into a paste, you need to add some liquid to it which dilutes the taste. But in the food processor, you can get a thick and creamy texture without adding any liquid to it.
But that doesn’t mean you can not make it in the mixer grinder. I made it in a mixer grinder for years until I invested in a food processor. And we always enjoyed and literally licked the bowl of hummus even when it was made in the blender. So, give it a try.

How to store Hummus?
You can make a big batch of hummus and refrigerate it in an air-tight container for up to a week (or more).
If you want to store it for a longer time, then put it in the freezer. It can last for a month. Whenever you want to use it, take out the hummus from the freezer well in advance to thaw, or else, put the jar in hot water and de-freeze the hummus.
