What is a Date Roll?

Date rolls are basically nutrient-dense food items that are packed with dried fruits, nuts, and seeds. In India, you get it very easily in local sweet shops, all customized in different ways. They make a delicious and healthy sweet (or mithai) for any festive occasion.

To make this, soft dates are combined with nuts and seeds and then rolled into a log. When it is set, it is sliced into pieces. Making this at home is very easy and homemade ones are always much better, made with quality ingredients, and you know what is going in your food.

What kind of Dates are needed for Dates and Nuts Ladoo?

The dates for this recipe need to be ones that are soft and pulpy. The dehydrated or dried ones will make these rolls slightly harder and it will be difficult to make the pistachios stick to them while rolling.

Khajur Barfi

Is this the same as Energy Balls or Protein Bars?

Yes. You can say that. The ingredients are the same as what can be used in a protein bar. I think it is just the presentation that makes it different from the protein or energy bars. And the fact that it is sold in sweet shops makes it an Indian sweet.

These are quite easy and quick to make and can last for 2 to 3 weeks in the refrigerator. These make a quick and easy dessert or a filling evening snack too. Just one piece and you are good to go because these are filling and even keep you energetic.

Easy Swaps

  1. Nuts & Seeds: Add anything that is available.
  2. Coconut Oil: You can use ghee, but that is not a plant-based or vegan product.

Is this recipe Vegan?

Yes because all the ingredients used in this recipe are plant-based and vegan. Generally, it is made with some ghee but I skipped that. I used coconut oil which adds a nice flavor too in this recipe.

How to store these Date Rolls?

Date Rolls or Khajur Barfi can be stored in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks (depending on the temperature in your region). You can even refrigerate for up to a month.

Ingredients

Steps

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add dates to it. Mix and let them soften for a few minutes on medium flame.ย
  2. It takes around 7 to 10 minutes depending on the moisture in your dates.ย
  3. Once done, take them out in a large bowl.
  4. In the same pan, roast cashews and almonds for a few minutes. Keep the flame on medium-low.
  5. Roasting nuts make them more flavourful.
  6. Once done, remove from the flame and add poppy seeds. Mix well for 1 to 2 minutes. Poppy seeds will roast with the heat of the pan.ย
  7. Add everything to the same bowl as the dates. Let them cool down for a few minutes so that it would be easier to mix. Mix well preferably with hands.ย
  8. Do not let them cool completely. It may harden and it would be difficult to mix and roll.
  9. Divide the mixture into two parts and roll them into a log shape - not very thick or thin. Apply some coconut oil to your palms if the mixture is too sticky.
  10. You can even roll them into small balls.
  11. Roll them over chopped pistachios or chopped goji berries. They will stick to the surface.ย
  12. Put them into the refrigerator until set. It takes around 30 minutes.
  13. Slice into 1-Inch pieces. Your quick and easy khajur barfi (or energy bar/roll) is ready. Enjoy.
