Tasty & Healthy Oats Appe

Tasty & Healthy Oats Appe

I know a lot of people who want to include oats in their diet because it is healthy but they just can’t enjoy the taste and ooey-gooey texture of it. They don’t like oats porridge or even masala oats. If you are one of them, then you must try this recipe – Oats Appe or Oats Paniyaram.

It is quick, easy, and exceptionally healthy too and you won’t even notice that it has oats in it. It is rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Perfect for a delightful, nutritious breakfast.

STORY TIME

If you are following my recipes for a while, you know how much I enjoy eating all things healthy and loaded with different kinds of vegetables. When I bought Appe Pan from Amazon, I wanted to make appe using oats and a lot of different veggies. I never had appe but just heard about it or read about it in some blogs. I wanted to create something using oats because I love oats as an ingredient and want to include in my regular diet. But Jatin doesn’t like it. He can’t eat oats porridge so I had to think of different recipes to include oats in our diet. That’s when I thought of making Oats Appe. And guess what, it was a hit in the first try itself. Yay.

It is perfect for those who don’t like oats at all. Because in this recipe, you can’t actually tell if it has oats or some other ingredient. I even add a lot of different veggies in it to make it even more nutritious. Moreover, since they are made of oats and not with lentils or rice, it is quice quick and easy to make. No need to soaking or grinding.

Oats Appe

WHAT IS APPE?

Appe or Paniyaram is an Indian dish made of a thick consistency batter of lentils and rice. Instant appe is usually made of sooji or oats or sometimes with whole wheat flour or millets flour too. The consistency of the batter is same as that of the dosa or idli. The batter is poured in the moulds of the pan and let it cook till golden brown from one side. then it is flipped and cooked from the other side too. They are slightly crispy from the outside and soft from the inside. They just melt it the mouth and guess what, I am drooling just by writing about it 😀

They taste so amazing with some coconut chutney or tomato onion chutney. They make a delicious, nutritious and fulfilling breakfast. You can add sifferent kinds of vegetables like onion, carrot, green beans or spinach and make them more exciting, colourful and healthy. It takes a little time to make if you want to feed the entire family since you can make a maximum of 12 pieces and they are gone in minutes. So, plan ahead if you want to make for the entire family.

BENEFITS OF OATS

Oats and their constituents possess varied drug-like activities like lowering of blood cholesterol and blood sugar, boosting our immune system, anti-cancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, useful in controlling childhood asthma, bodyweight & BMI and improves the liver function, etc.

Oats come in various different forms – steel-cut, rolled, instant, flour, whole grain etc. You can use it in any form but every form works differently in our body despite the fact that each kind is the same ingredient – Oats. In my opinion, the least processed ones are the best for our bodies.

Steps

  1. In a bowl, add all the ingredients (except for baking soda) and mix well. Set aside for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Sooji and oats need some time to soften. That is why resting time is important.
  3. Once rested, adjust the consistency of water in the batter if needed. The batter should have medium consistency and should be easily pourable.
  4. Add baking soda 5 minutes before you are ready to cook.
  5. Don't add baking soda and leave it for long. It kills the effect of baking soda.
  6. Heat the Appe pan and apply some oil in each mould.
  7. Fill each mould with the batter and let them cook from one side. Add some oil on top of each appe. You may cover the lid of the pan.
  8. Once they are cooked from one side, flip and cook from the other side too.
  9. Once they are well cooked from both sides, take them out and serve hot.
  10. Serve with some coriander chutney or coconut chutney. Enjoy your happy meal :)

What is the origin of Appam?
+

Appam is like a savory mini pancake made of lentils or rice batter. They are originally from South India. They call in Paniyaram too. But now it is getting popular in other parts of India too. I lived in Maharashtra for 6 years and saw this dish for the first time in Pune, Maharashtra only. It is served as breakfast there. It is not very popular in North India though.

How to check if baking soda is not expired?
+

To check if baking soda is not expired and it is good to use, just take 1 Tsp of baking soda in a bowl. Add some acidic ingredient like lemon juice or vinegar to it. If it forms bubbles instantly, it means it is good to use. If it doesn’t form the bubbles, it means it is expired and should be discarded. Baking soda expires in a couple of months. So, if you have an old pack, just check before using it.
