Story Time

Some time back, I was in a cafe with a friend of mine. We met over breakfast and she ordered granola with strawberry sauce. Although, the granola she ordered had more curd and an extremely less quantity of strawberry sauce and granola in it. Anyway, that is not the point I want to focus on but that was funny to share 😀

I always enjoy homemade granola especially because I get to eat more granola and I would never prefer to order it outside in a cafe or restaurant. But that time when I was with my friend, I tasted a spoon of granola from her bowl and it was very tasty. I wanted to eat more from her bowl but I resisted and thought that I would also try this combination at home with homemade granola and strawberry sauce. After trying granola with strawberry sauce, we got addicted to having granola with some fruit or berry sauce. That’s when I realized that blueberry is also in season.

What then? I went to the store, bought a big pack of blueberries, and made it. Voila! We are in a pool of granola galore. The best thing is “how gorgeous it looks”. It is blue when you buy it. After cooking, it turns dark pink and when you mix with curd, it turns purple. What is all that magic? Since then, we are only enjoying our granola with this gorgeous sauce.

What is Granola?

Granola is a quick and easy breakfast or snack food that is made up of rolled oats, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and some sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, etc. All these ingredients are mixed well and then cooked or baked together until golden brown and crispy. It comes in different varieties and flavors too and if you are making it at home, you can actually customize it as per your own taste buds.

You can add different kinds of nuts and seeds that are available, dried fruits like mango, apple, pineapple, etc. You can even add some spices like cinnamon, gingerbread spices, and nutmeg. Because we get so many different kinds of rolled grains these days like wheat or millet, we can customize it by using different kinds of grains and make it extra healthy and nutritious.

The best part is that you don’t need to cook it while serving it like other cereals or Musli. Just add it over curd or milk, top it up with some fresh fruits, and enjoy.

P.S. It is also called crunchy muesli or crunchy oats.

How to eat Granola?

Granola is a quick and easy breakfast (or snack). You don’t need to cook it further while eating because it is already baked or well-toasted. You can simply add it to milk or over the curd, yogurt, or Greek yogurt. Top it up with some fresh-cut fruits like bananas, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, grapes, mango, apple, etc. to make it even more delicious and wholesome.

You can even top it up with some strawberry sauce, blueberry sauce, or any fruit sauce that you have. It tastes even more delicious.

Steps

Blueberry Sauce
  1. In a saucepan, add blueberries, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Mix and cook on medium-low flame. It will release its juice and become soft.
  2. Keep mixing and mashing it from the back of your spatula.
  3. Cook until the blueberries release their juice, become soft and mushy, and the juice starts becoming slightly thicker. It takes around 15 minutes on medium flame.
  4. Once it is done and you get the desired consistency, remove it from the flame and let it cool completely.
  5. It thickens further on cooling and becomes even thicker after refrigeration.
  6. Once cool completely, store it in a clean air-tight container. Refrigerate.
  7. If you want an extra smooth consistency, blend it and strain it using a sieve. But I prefer it slightly chunky. The consistency of this sauce or compote is thick which makes it just perfect to eat with granola.
Serving Suggestion (per person)
  1. In a bowl, add 1/3 Cup of Curd or Yogurt. Top it up with 2 to 3 Tbsp of blueberry sauce (or as needed).
  2. Add some fresh fruits and berries on top along with some homemade granola.
  3. Finish it off with some fresh mint leaves. Serve right away and enjoy this crunchy and delicious breakfast.
  4. Add any fruit of choice.

Can we make Granola in the microwave?
+

You can surely make granola in the microwave if it has a convection setting. Simply preheat the microwave (for around 10 minutes) and then bake the ingredients at 180°C for around 30 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Stir occasionally to avoid burning and to ensure even cooking.

Can we make Granola on the gas stove?
+

Yes. Of course. You can make the recipe on the gas stove but it would be more time taking and you need to keep mixing it continuously to avoid burning. To make it on the gas stove, you can mix all the ingredients together (except dried fruits) and add them to a greased pan. Cook on the lowest flame and toast until golden brown and crispy.
